Ultraphotostable and bright fluorophores for single molecule studies

(MAESTRO 8 NCN grant 2016/22/A/ST4/00029)

We wanted to obtain very photostable molecules that would simultaneously exhibit high fluorescence quantum yield. In order to achieve that, spectroscopy and photophysics of series of organic molecules have been studied. Of particular interest were the systems in which the excited state lifetime is sensitive to substituents and to the environment. Knowledge of mechanisms responsible for such behavior is crucial for designing new molecules targeted for specific purposes.

The project involved close cooperation between synthetic organic chemists and spectroscopists.

The studied molecules included derivatives of porphyrin and its isomers as well as bifunctional proton donor/acceptor heteroazaaromatic molecules.
